Role of the Book Designer

Before embarking on my writing journey, I had no idea that book design was a profession. I hadn’t even heard the term before! Now that the artwork for my book is complete and my publisher has submitted all the files to the book designer, I thought it might be helpful to talk about the book designer’s role in the publishing process.

In short, a book designer assembles a book’s elements (its pages, text, illustrations, front cover, spine, back cover, dust jacket, etc.) into a cohesive, eye-catching package that invites readers to take a closer look.  A designer combines the illustrations and text into one PDF file that printers will use to print the book. Designers choose the font, lay out the text, and ensure the book flows and is legible, fun, and easy to read.

For picture books, the front cover is a delicate balance of text and illustrations that must communicate the content and tone of a book to attract the right readers.  A book designer knows how to achieve this balance by creating a striking front cover that can significantly improve a book’s overall appearance and marketability.

The designer collaborates with the author, illustrator, and publisher to make any necessary adjustments based on feedback.

After the adjustments have been made, the designer prepares the files for print, considering how the colors will reproduce on paper. They prepare proofs for review, which might include digital or printed versions. This allows the author, illustrator, and publisher to see how the final product will look.

Once the proofs are approved, the designer creates print-ready files, ensuring everything is formatted for the printing process (e.g., resolution, bleed, margins).  The files are uploaded to Amazon KDP, Ingram Spark, or another printer.  Shortly after that, the author can order copies of their book.

I can’t wait to hold my book in my hands! The time is finally coming near.
